What are the 5 Principles of Reiki?

Updated: Dec 28, 2022

In a world where we are constantly seeking new ways to be happy, it's refreshing and inspiring to know there's a practice with timeless principles which can help us find peace of mind... Reiki.

Reiki energy healing promotes healing, reduces anxiety, benefits our well being, strengthens our connection to our higher self, improves energy flow throughout the body, promotes balance, and so much more.

Reiki has been around since the 20th century as an energy healing technique originally developed by Mikao Usui. The Buddhist monk believed these "reiki" or guiding laws would serve him well physically during his time on earth and also spiritually after death when he anticipated entering heaven’s dimension called "nirvana." The final resting place for those granted Muktinath enlightenment (a state beyond verbal description).

3 Simple Principles for a Better Life

What if there were simple guidelines to live by? Simple rules to implement into your busy life that simply made it all better. Principles like:

1. The 12 Universal Laws

These meditations were passed down through generations in Ancient Hawaiian culture until they reached their modern-day iterations. People practice this spiritual technique to gain freedom from stress, pain, and suffering by forgiving themselves or others unconditionally while making amends for any wrongdoings committed in past lives.

2. The 8 Limbs of Yoga

The eight limbs of yoga are not only about physical postures but also purity and observance. The first four components include abstaining from certain actions or substances that may harm the body and practicing regular breathing exercises in order to maintain good health throughout one's life force energy.

The last four components involve the withdrawal of senses to concentrate on one thing which leads to meditation, mindfulness, and cultivating peace within yourself through self-control over your thoughts.

3. Marie Kondo's Concept: "Does This Spark Joy?"

On her famous show, Marie Kondo explains: "It's not about how much we have, but rather what kind of feelings do the items generate in us?"

When you find something that makes your heart happy, it's like an invisible wave of joy spreading through every cell in your body. You can feel all the cells rising as if they were elevated by some kind of energy drink. If it doesn't spark joy, it doesn't belong in your life.

What are the Basics of Reiki?

With its focus on the present moment, Reiki is there to help you embody spiritual energy throughout your day. The principles speak directly about how these guidelines can be used in everyday life--whether during meditation or as an intention before going out into it like this one mere single grain of sand lonely tiny particle seeking itself among millions Another way they might come up would just happen naturally without necessarily being planned at all since we're always adapting according to what works best. Let's talk about the five reiki principles.

What are the 5 Reiki Principles?

Reiki is considered by many to be the best form of alternative medicine out there, with countless success stories from all over the world about how this energy healing practice helped them in their time of need. These are the 5 principles of Reiki:

1. Just for today, do not worry

2. Just for today, do not anger

3. Just for today, be humble

4. Just for today, be honest

5. Just for today, be compassionate to yourself and others

So without being a Reiki master, how do I incorporate the spiritual practice of Reiki into my daily life? Let's break it down...

How do I apply the five Reiki Principles in my Daily Life?

Just like there are many ways to live a healthier, more fulfilling, and balanced life, the principles of Reiki energy provide us with tools that can help guide our thoughts and actions every day. This is taught by reiki practitioners in promoting spiritual growth and personal development, both of which will aid you on your journey towards living an authentic existence. Who doesn't want that?

With these powerful words at hand (or heart), use them wisely!

1. Just for today, do not worry

The future is an imagined place that we create in our minds. When you're feeling overwhelmed with worrying about what might happen or how things will turn out, this reiki principle can help ground you into the present moment. Simply focus on the here and now.

In remembering this Reiki energy principle, we tap into our faith and breathe into the present moment. With a few adjustments in thinking or feeling, or simply by being mindful of what is happening now, the end result can create significant shifts for yourself as well as others around you.

It's easy to forget how amazing life is when it flies by.

We need time in the present moment, without distractions or worry about what might happen next  to really appreciate all that we have and were given.

2. Just for today, do not anger

Consider how you're feeling. It's natural for our emotions to be strong when someone or something crosses an emotional boundary, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they need expression right then and there, especially if we don't understand the reason behind them yet. Allowing yourself time during these moments can help release some tension while also giving clarity on what may have caused such an intense response from within yourself.

When something makes you viscerally angry, try to get at its root. Sit with it for a moment before acting. This is not about suppressing emotions, but coming to terms with our anger and peeling away the layers so that we can see what has really triggered us.

3. Just for today, be humble

When you do something great, it's healthy to celebrate, but never celebrate yourself too much. Your ego loves taking credit for accomplishments and getting validation from other people who are impressed with what you've done. However, if we notice our self-esteem boosting off too much because of compliments or how wonderful we've been doing lately then let ourselves bow down just once before loving and simply being grateful without expectations.

Focusing more on what you're grateful for helps you recognize your own strengths. It also helps you understand where compassion needs to exist, especially when it comes time to give back through service. Living life for yourself is meaningless, living a life to serve others is fulfilling.

4. Just for today, be honest

We all want to be loved and accepted, but the most important thing is honoring ourselves just as we are. Let your authentic self shine through by practicing "just for today." It's a great way of taking those first baby steps.

You are a beautiful and unique individual. You deserve to love yourself just the way you are for all of your uniqueness' sake. It's important that we learn how to take care of our mental health, but it should never come as a sacrifice to our own self-love. What would happen if tomorrow were different than today? What might I have accomplished by now?

You are worth it. You deserve to love yourself just as you are today, especially if that means being a more authentic and true version of yourself. Life isn't about trying "hard enough," it is about choosing joyfully how our life will be. Be honest with yourself and don't allow what anyone else expects to taint your honest vision of how your life should be.

5. Just for today, be compassionate toward yourself and others

The healing power of compassion can be seen in how it allows us to see things differently. When we practice being understanding and forgiving, as with any skill worth having, our ability to be kinder and more empathetic to others will grow tremendously over time. This, in turn, leads to a life with far less negativity and much more fulfillment.

When we're feeling judgmental and angry, it's hard to see the good in others. This can lead us down a dark path where our own sense of worthlessness is validated by other people. There are several ways you can start practicing compassion in your daily life:

1. Cut yourself some slack when necessary

2. Give others the benefit of the doubt every now and then

3. Regularly seek to understand the perspectives of others.

If you're struggling to understand other perspectives, set the intention of seeing things through love and compassion. You could say something like: "I'm having difficulty judging myself or someone else; help me see them as they really are."

3 variations of reiki principles

There are also different variations of the reiki precepts. Here are three more that you can incorporate into your reiki practice:

Just for today, I will earn my living honestly

Honesty is the key to success. Money certainly isn't everything. We have to be honest and true in our lives. Success cannot happen when there are no successes left within yourself. It's important to think about all the areas of your life you could improve upon. These include daily things such as:

1. Improving work ethic

2. Developing Healthier relationships

3. Spending more time with loved ones

4. Cultivating a more positive attitude

Be yourself, whatever that really means. Oftentimes, the person who stands in the way of our happiness the most is ourselves.

Just for today, I will honor my parents, teachers, and elders

Life as we know it has been shaped by the actions and decisions of our ancestors. This doesn't mean we should worship them and believe they're perfect, but it also means they deserve some gratitude regularly. In turn, this helps us maintain an open mind and a broader perspective of what life is all about.

In order for us all to grow together into better versions of ourselves, we must first realize how every person that has ever lived has influenced history positively and negatively. Learning from the mistakes of the past can help us carve out the best possible future. On the other side of the coin, appreciating what's made life great in the past can help us stay on the right path and appreciate what we have in our lives today.

Just for today, I will show gratitude for everything

There is so much that we take for granted. The little moments in life that we forget to appreciate, pass by quicker and quicker the older we get. Simply incorporating gratitude into our daily lives can be a profound source of healing and joy.

In this day in age, it's more important than ever to be grateful for our lives. Some days, we literally forget to put down the phone and look up at the beauty around us. Every once in a while, it's healthy to stop constantly scrolling through social media apps and just what unfolds around us before our eyes.

Just for today, I release thoughts of worry

This energy healing principle reminds us that much of our worry is actually self-generated. And when we're able to release that worry energy, we open ourselves up to living more fully in the present moment.

As a reiki master, I've seen firsthand how out of all these reiki principles, this one can help directly transform lives. When we let go of fear, we make way for positive energy to flow in. This can lead to improved health and well-being on all levels - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

If you're struggling with worry or stress, I encourage you to explore reiki and other forms of energy healing. Just for today, allow yourself to let go of those worries and embrace the present moment. You may be surprised at how much better you feel as a result!

Just for today, I expand my consciousness

This is one of the strongest reiki principles. This principle encourages you to be more mindful and appreciate the present moment. Through the energy healing concept of expanding your consciousness, you are opening yourself up to more positive energy and possibilities.

Reiki is an energy treatment that helps to balance your energy and promote healing. By expanding your consciousness, you are allowing yourself to receive more reiki energy and benefit from its healing properties.

This principle is a reminder to live in the now and appreciate all that you have. You deserve to live a happy and healthy life!

Just for today, I'm gentle with all beings

Being gentle with all beings is more than just a nice thing to do--it's essential for your spiritual health. When you are kind and compassionate to others, you open yourself up to receiving positive energy in return. This principle is at the heart of complementary and alternative medicine therapies like reiki. During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner will focus on channeling positive energy into the patient's body.

The goal is to help the patient achieve a state of balance and harmony, both physically and spiritually. By being gentle with all beings--including yourself--you can allow this positive energy to flow freely, leading to a healthier and happier life.

As a reiki master, I've seen firsthand how these reiki principles can help transform lives. When we let go of worry energy, we make way for positive energy to flow in. This can lead to improved health and well-being on all levels - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

If you're struggling with worry or stress, I encourage you to try out a reiki session with me. I offer distance healing and in-person energy healing here:
